Random fact about me that you shouldn't try at home: when I was applying for residency, I never got any of the fancy, you-know-you-want-to-hire-me professional headshots everyone else got.
One reason was that I was only a year old living in the United States, moved around a lot, recently moved back to Chicago and didn't know any professional photographers. So I asked a fellow medical student at the time to take me a picture with my phone (a very bad picture with bad lighting) and sent that in with my applications.
Also, I knew NRMP didn't reveal your picture to the residency programs until they invited you for an interview (so programs invited you based off your CV, rather than looks!). However, I was shocked to go for interviews and find our pictures displayed, with mine looking terrible compared to my co-interviewees. I kept telling myself, "no residency will want to hire you after the interview season when they pull up the pictures of the people they interviewed and see your disheveled hair!"
Thankfully, as God would have it, I ended up matching into my first choice! But again missed on the memo for professional headshots during our intern orientation June of last year because I was still in my home country getting my affairs in order.
My residency finally arranged for me to get my professional headshot late last month (I'm in PGY2 now), and I'm so excited to get my first ever professional headshot! (Hopefully, that would be helpful in the future! )
