Check journeybeyondearth's Instagram As millions of people across the United States experienced a total eclipse as the umbra, or moon’s shadow passed over them, only six people witnessed the umbra from space. Viewing the eclipse from orbit were NASA’s Randy Bresnik, Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson, ESA (European Space Agency’s) Paolo Nespoli, and Roscosmos’ Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy. The space station crossed the path of the eclipse three times as it orbited above the continental United States at an altitude of 250 miles. •

This is the first direct observational evidence that at least some of the earliest so-called "dead" galaxies, where star formation stopped, somehow evolve from a Milky Way-shaped disk into the giant elliptical galaxies we see today. Previous studies of distant dead galaxies have assumed that their structure is similar to the local elliptical galaxies they will evolve into. This is due to the fact that elliptical galaxies usually contain older stars whereas spiral galaxies contain younger blue stars

Confirming this assumption in principle requires more powerful space telescopes than are currently available. However, through the phenomenon known as "gravitational lensing," a massive, foreground cluster of galaxies acts as a natural "zoom lens" in space by magnifying and stretching images of far more distant background galaxies. By joining this natural lens with the resolving power of Hubble, scientists were able to see into the center of the dead galaxy, MACS2129-1 ~
