The relation of Hijras [Indian Transwomen] from South India and Kali. Kali is the Goddess of Time, Creation, Destruction and Power. She is a consort of Shiva and seen by some as the Divine Mother, Mother of the Universe.
In the Vedic Scriptures (that is around 3500 years ago), she appears in the "Mahabharata", which includes an episode in which Arjun, a hero of the epic, is sent into an exile. There he assumes the identity of a hijra by castrating himself and eventually living as a woman [transition]. Meanwhile, Iravan, an other hero of the epic, about to go to a battle where he was doomed, offered his lifeblood to goddess Kali to ensure the victory of his people, and Kali agrees to grant him power. On the night before the battle, Iravan expressed a desire to get married before he dies. No woman was willing to marry a man doomed to die in a few hours, so Arjun (as Brihinala) married him. In South India, hijras claim Iravan as their progenitor and call themselves "aravanis"... #transartforall #hijras #aravanis #hindutradition #transculture #tgirlspower #transwoman #girlslikeus #transgirl #tgirl #mtf #justbeyourself
