From Monday: The Birthday of Dr. MLK Jr. Historian Kim Simmons indicated that we were in for something special during our current adventure to Detroit/ Windsor. Our preparations had not readied us for what we experienced along the Canadian border in the Sandwich First Baptist Church that day. On land gifted by the Canadian government and in a settlement comprised mostly of freedom seekers, a church was built by the Watkins family, who were former passangers on the Underground Railroad themselves. It hosted thousands of courageous individuals, escaping the most horrifying of situations. Crawling thousands of yards through tunnels from the banks of the Detroit River, this beautiful place was a passageway to a life in their "Promised Land." Even here, folks were hidden under the floorboards of the church to escape slave catchers. So many people forget that "the Northern states" were not the final stop on a journey for those escaping bondage, but often times just another point on their way to Canada- where black people were truly free. #canadianhistory @sinergiaarts @superbroad @beautyandbrawnartgallery @simillitude

"I got in with a signals officer and a chap from the [Royal Army] Ordnance Corps I think – three of us. And then one day I said, “Why don’t we have a camp magazine?” And they thought that was a wonderful idea. So the ordnance officer thought about it and came up with a plan, what we should have and somebody to talk about what was going on in the camp, what was going on in the war, and anything else we could get." The Rezzanello Review ran for nine months and the cartoons and covers were drawn by Arthur Powell. Did you know that if you live in AB you are a Treaty person? You are living on land that is an ancient homeland to Indigenous people, & you are part of a Treaty signed 100+ years ago where 5 First Nations agreed to share their ancestral land in exchange for things like peace, friendship, payment & land use from non-Indigenous people. The thing is, us non-Indigenous people aren’t doing a good job at honouring this sacred Treaty. Not only do most of us not realize we are a part of a Treaty, we also don’t engage in peace, friendship and shared land use with our Indigenous peers. . . At MNN we are realizing that living an “ethical” life includes knowing and honouring the land you are on. We realize we have been shamefully ignorant for too long about this. We want to include the important topic of Indigenous rights in our ongoing exploration of ethical living in hopes of doing our part to make our community a more intentional place. ✨ . . Let’s start with a fact we feel like we should have learned way back in elementary school: if you live in Alberta you are living on either Treaty 6, 7 or 8 land. If you are living in Calgary or nearby, you are on Treaty 7 land. Photo: @heyvian . . . . #canadianhistory
